2024 Truck Driver Symposium

The Department hosted the inaugural Truck Driver Wellness Symposium under the theme: ‘Your safety and wellness is our concern’. The event was held on the 06th – 07th March 2024 at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg, Gauteng. The event was attended by approximately 360 people, ranging from truck drivers, truck unions and associations, freight industry expects, government officials (national and provincial), and exhibitors, listed below:

At the inaugural Truck Driver Safety and Wellness Symposium, various services were offered, categorized into the following themes:

Health and Wellness Services:

  • Trucking Wellness and the Department of Transport (Wellness) provided wellness and counselling services, including testing for diabetes, HIV, and blood pressure.
  • GUUD Global conducted visual acuity tests for drivers.
  • Aguae Vida offered a hydration station and information on the health benefits of proper hydration on the road.
  • Khoi Tech presented information on the use of smartwatches to monitor and improve truck drivers’ health.


Safety and Road Usage Information:

  • SANRAL provided insights into road user safety and responsible driving behaviours.
  • SaferStops Association shared information on truck stops and the essential facilities required to meet drivers’ needs.


Professional Development and Support:

  • Road Freight Association (RFA) discussed opportunities for truck drivers to develop additional skills within the freight industry.
  • Hollard emphasized the importance of insurance for drivers.
  • Affinity Health highlighted the benefits of having medical aid as a truck driver.


Product Displays and Technological Advancements:

  • Iveco, Isuzu Motors, Hino South Africa, and UD Trucks showcased their latest truck and bus models, featuring advanced technologies designed to enhance driver comfort and safety. Volvo Trucks South Africa presented their latest electric vehicle (EV) truck technology, demonstrating a commitment to sustainable and innovative transport solutions.
  • Jonsson Workwear displayed the latest in workwear suitable for the trucking profession.
